In my distant pre-parenthood past I was a casual PC gamer. My gaming was casual to the extent that I’d buy about one game a year from the discount rack at Best Buy (usually after bonus time). As a software developer I’ve been interested in computer graphics and high performance computing since high school, so in addition to playing games I am interested in how they are developed.
I have been reading for quite a while about the decline of PCs as a gaming platform. It never really made sense to me, since PCs are typically much more powerful than consoles and easier to develop on to boot.
The decline didn’t make sense until Angry Overeducated Catholic bought me “Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade” for my birthday.
Let us compare the gaming experience for a casual PC gamer and a casual console player.
The PC Game Experience:
- Insert the DVD ROM. Run the autoplay that it starts up, if your PC is foolishly configured to run what ever DVD you insert into it.
- Run through the typically crappy win32 installation script.
- Type in 20 alphanumberic digits to prove that you are either not a thief, or a thief bright enough to copy a 20 digit number along with a DVD-ROM.
- Try starting the game.
- Find out that the “spooge could not be found.”
- Google for “Spooge could not be found” and discover it means that you don’t have direct X 9.0c installed on your PC.
- Install Direct x 9 on your PC. No, wait, unpack the installation files for Direct X 9 and then run an installation program off the directory.
- Hope your PC still boots. It does
- Start the game.
- Discover that the game lets you move the camera in every direction except up.
- Search the web for patches. Find several, none of which are hosted by the maker of the defective software.
- Fill out two registration forms, including ones that want your birthday, to download patches. Let me get this straight — I’m sold buggy software and now I have to provide my personal information to get the fixes for bugs?
- Try to figure out which ones you have to download. Do you have to download each one in order, or are they all inclusive?
- Struggle through the download process, which is the typical crapware that wants to install an executable so I can simply download a file. Not like that problem hasn’t been solved on TCP/IP for thirty years.
- Discover you’ve downloaded a patch for “Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War”, not “Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade”. Download the correct patches.
- Discover that the training module works, but that the game does not.
The console game experience on my brother-in-law’s PS whatever.
- Select DVD-ROM.
- Insert DVD-ROM.
- Start playing game.
You’ll notice that one of them sucks and the other doesn’t, and that the difference has nothing to do with the hardware. It’s the software. And near as I can tell, if the PC gaming market is failing, the market is working just fine. The PC gaming market deserves to fail.
June 15, 2007 at 9:53 am
Preach on brother, preach on. I mean delibrately releasing unfinished games and saying “We’ll take care of that in the patch”!?! We ought to cast our votes as consumers by not purchasing said suckfest. Players everywhere should refuse to drink the Kool Aid.
June 15, 2007 at 11:18 pm
You forgot step 4.
Hope your console doesn’t catch on fire.
September 3, 2011 at 11:35 am
1) They have fixed that problem, BTW that only happens to the first version of 360’s.
2) You are obviously a PC gamer, but face it, Console gaming is so much easier. Sure PC has better graphics, but it’s not worth it to go through ALL that shit. I honestly agree with him, PC gaming is really dumb. You have to pay SO MUCH for software and hardware, and have to download a shitload of shit for the system requirements. For consoles: Go buy the game. Insert disk. Play. THATS IT. The only reason I play PC is because of Minecraft but once it goes onto consoles I’m switching boats.
July 1, 2013 at 2:15 pm
Umm well then added in
Step 4.5: get a fan 😉

Unfortunately, this cavalier attitude towards completion of product extends far beyond the PC games market. I’ve seen some pretty amazingly lame first releases of other software, not just games.
June 17, 2007 at 5:38 pm
Microsoft has been incredibly damaging in this regard.
When the near-monopolist for business critical applications like Office and Excel can successfully sell products which contain serious mathematical errors, why should we expect any better from game companies?
And when Microsoft can sell an email reader that, by default out of the box, allowed simple methods to hijack your computer (cough, Outlook, cough), why should we be surprised if game companies are cavalier?
And when the average computer user votes with his dollars that his operating system crashing regularly is normal, expected, and acceptable, why should game companies invest any effort in stability?
It doesn’t have to be this way, but it is, and we have only ourselves to blame.

Not to defend Microsoft, but the mathematical errors in Excel were (or are) nearly all repeated in software like Open Office. It took MS way longer than it should have to fix the errors, but they did finally fix most of the egregious ones about five years ago. (Easiest to notice: using their built in function stdev, calculate the standard deviation of {0, 1, 2} and of {100000000,100000001,100000002}. In real number arithmetic, these should both equal 1 but in older copies of Excel—and a lot of other software—the first quantity would equal 1 and the second 0 due to roundoff error.)
Many of these problems are due to the industry practice of handing off “serious” programming to code monkeys without guidance from actual experts to make sure the code monkeys did the right thing. It’s an industry-wide problem and not made any better by users’ tendencies to trust what computers give them. While I agree that MS doesn’t help matters being the market leader, the problem is bigger than them.
###And when the average computer user votes with his dollars that his operating system crashing regularly is normal, expected, and acceptable, why should game companies invest any effort in stability?###
My beef with game companies is less in terms of stability—given what computer games are doing on as shitty a platform as Windows, I’d say many are AMAZINGLY stable—but with ones that bugger up the content or release unfinished games. This means you, Lucas Arts….
June 18, 2007 at 3:24 pm
Hey Lucas arts let my tie fighter get blowed up by a Mon Calamari Cruiser jumping into the battle! I’ll put up with the VCR file bugs and strange 2D asteroid of glitchiness to have that happen 🙂
June 18, 2007 at 3:50 pm
Yeah, I didn’t mean to imply that Microsoft is the only culprit, but as the market leader their ability to sell crap without the normal consequences (lawsuits, dropped business, etc.) sets the standard.
Hey Lucas arts let my tie fighter get blowed up by a Mon Calamari Cruiser jumping into the battle!
Actually, that is pretty awesome. When I was watching the battles in Star Wars, I always wondered, “Don’t these fleets sometimes, you know, just drop out of hyper with some ships in just the wrong place (too close to an object to avoid it, etc.).”
Good to see that finally happen! Too bad it happened to you! 🙂
June 18, 2007 at 9:37 pm
No sympathies needed, I happened to have the VCR recorder turned on during the battle, when suddenly I just died, had no idea how, so while watching the VCR file from the exterior, I see it happen (including the small little puff of flame where my fighter had been). As ANM can attest it was one of my favorite moments in video game history!
While there may been some major bugs in the game, I’ll tolerate them for that 🙂

Your a fool, anyone that supports this blog is a fool. Say what you like about pc’s, but while you enjoy your console or handheld shit, remember that all games for all platforms are created and written on computers.
October 20, 2009 at 4:59 pm
Aww did the big bad blog man hurt you fewwings?
April 19, 2010 at 11:40 pm
“remember that all games for all platforms are created and written on computers”
So what? All cakes are made using flour. I don’t know anyone who eats and enjoys raw flour on its own. Do you?
March 11, 2012 at 8:01 pm
but what would a cake be without flower?
May 23, 2008 at 11:25 am
In fact why even bother with a pc I mean your running blog via one??
September 3, 2011 at 11:38 am
We are talking about PC gaming dumb ass. It’s not that we hate computers, we hate playing games on computers. Sure they are created on PCs, so what? That’s your only reason why it’s better? LOL PC gamers have little to say why it’s better on PC rather console.
February 24, 2012 at 11:11 am
We do. We just don’t bother, because you people wouldn’t see our point.
August 26, 2008 at 10:43 am
Playing a game on a pc is not worth the trouble it is meant to be. You got to keep buying cards and software to keep the damn thing up to date (which could cost you around $1000.00 and every other month). The damn computer goes aboslete within 6 months to a year meaning you have to buy more cards, new montherboard, sound card ext… Then to run the computer you have to be some sort of a genius (how many of you got an error sign and didnt even now wtf to do?.
There even is not a whole lot of games to choose from on the pc right now or even in the future. The only games im looking forward for the pc is starcraft 2, diablo 3, Duke nukem forever (if for console i would get rather than the pc), and left 4 dead (if for console i would rather get than pc). Most of the computer games i saw at wall mart, best buy and any other store suck complete a$$.
March 30, 2010 at 11:48 am
In what distant dimension do you live in ? 1000 dollars …. get your facts right before you talk.
September 24, 2008 at 9:49 am
Todays PC games are just garbage to be frank. There is no though, no creativity involved at all! Its just some crappy FPS with amazing eye candy or some shitty RPG that breaks ever 3 minutes. What happened to Myst, or The Incredible machine, or even a good Fallout?!?
September 24, 2008 at 1:46 pm
I have been a hardcore PC gamer for 6 years now and I’m ready to give up and buy an xbox360. The PC game market SUCKS!!! We get a few good games a year, while consoles get 1 a month at least. If we do get a good game we have to wait a year for them to port it over. It’s also true that these hardware manufacturers (nvidia) take advantage of consumers by half ass upgrades to their cards. The MOUSE is mightier then the controller, period. The control you have with your wrist is far more coordinated then a thumb. That’s why I love PC games, but it looks like I’ll become a thumb jockey sooner or later.
September 26, 2008 at 11:56 pm
PC gaming sucks and it’s a waste of money! It’s crazy buy a $40 game then find out you need a $150 card to run it. And this will happen over and over again ram, cpu, gpu its a endless money pit cycle! I’m saving up money to get a PS3 or XBOX 360. I had enough of BS with the hardware treadmill.
November 9, 2008 at 5:22 am
PC Gaming- It was just meant for people who can buy stuff frequently
Console Gaming- graphics kind of suck against low settings on gaming and i mostly play first person shooter games and controllers kinda suck against keyboard and mouse accuracy.Plus to make matters worst with $400 you could build a Q6600,nForce 750i,8800GTX SLi,4GB PC vs PS3 with 3-core processor,7900GT GPU,256MB XDR
That’s why I always choose PC Gaming vs console plus with $200 you could upgrade your system to Q9550 rather than buy a console.
plus Next Gen Consoles: Are they really next gen if they were they would run Crysis at Low at least (It cant run Crysis at Low because of 256MB and lower RAM) and Crysis is upgrading to another level of realism graphics and have consoles ever upgraded to the “next level”. They are so 2006
HD1080p or XHD1200p or XD1440p or EXHD 10K Gaming.were upgrading in 2008 and 2009 1080p is not the “highest defintion resolution” available. it would be worth it to wait a while b4 buying a new console at least dont u think no t to mention a hdtv dont be discouraged by other people sayying ur “outdated” wait for the XDTV’s there coming out in around Q1-Q2 2009.They will be so freakin jealous at your 1440p XDTV
Just some reccomendations. Dont buy console now. there not next gen wait for the new ones or buy a PC. unless u dont want graphics and all that and dont care if u see a PS4 or something like that then go ahead buy a new ps3/x360/wii.
November 9, 2008 at 5:25 am
what about the 8800GTS it’s sufficient enough to play games and it was released like what a year and a half. Dont be saying oh you gotta to upgrade every six months.
at least the 7900GX2 is enough to play Crysis at All Very High 2xAA. and that was released 2 1/2 years ago!!!!
Ur so stupid/.
November 9, 2008 at 5:29 am
plus xbox 360 has that ring of death faulty thing so why waste urmoney on one then find out its already broken in 6 months.
ps3 has this dvd/blu-ray disc reading problem where it wont read the disc.and this is what i get for spending almost $500 for one
games are freakin $60 on the consoles while PC games are like $40. id rather save the money.
$20 buys u a 8400GS which plays crysis on low vs a ps3 not capable of playing it.
August 20, 2010 at 2:03 pm
Yeah but why can i play GTA without stupid bugs on PC?
November 17, 2008 at 1:30 pm
WHAT??? “with $400 you could build a Q6600,nForce 750i,8800GTX SLi,4GB PC ” Where do you buy your parts? q6600 is $180 alone and and 8800gtx in SLI is more then $200. Please have your facts right before posting nonsense. I have built 5 gaming rigs in the last 6 years and never has it EVER been under $400. The difference is with consoles the games themselves are optimized for the systems as where with PCs the games are made to blow away all previous hardware to gain graphic superiority.
P.S. I have also seen XBOX-360 in HD 1080p and it looks amazing.
December 2, 2008 at 1:10 am
Fuck the PC AND all of these seventh generation consoles. All I want and need is my PS2.
February 2, 2012 at 11:25 am
But ps3 also runs ps2 games!
December 4, 2008 at 12:12 am
I opted out of PC gaming long ago, though I still do single player on the crash-prone PoE2 mod for Battlefield 2 until my 360 gets back from the MicroSweatshop (had it for over a year, it started overheating in my first session of GTA4 and soon got to the point where only arcade games could be played without overheating). I prefer to replace a 360 once every 1.5-2 years instead of having to upgrade my PC every six months (and just so I can play an increasingly shitty selection of games to boot).
January 27, 2009 at 6:43 pm
I used to be a console gamer…and oh how i miss those days. Been gaming on PC for about 2 years now and it sucks. 1/2 of the games I have downloaded wont run right, have errors or wont even run at all. I’ll be so glad when I can afford to buy another console because PC gaming sucks and can kiss my @$$. The only decent game I have found thats free and runs good is Urban Terror. All the others just suck.
January 27, 2009 at 6:45 pm
btw justin your an idiot!
March 11, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Well, you all have very good comments as to why you’re having trouble with PC games. But you might also think that consoles are just as bad. For one thing, the consoles do “change” IE: PS One, PS2, PS3… see… you still have to spend tons of money for new shit. Either way, it’s one big circle jerk of fun. One thing good with PC games is that most, if not all, are very customizable and can make mods for them, or download modifications for them. As for consoles… forget it.
While you’re at it, if you’re bored with PC gaming, you can surf the net on… guess what? A PC! A console lacks this option unfortunately.
Consoles also have a very hard time with pirated games, as for a PC doesn’t seem to have a single problem with it at all, AND you can also copy CONSOLE games to your PC and play them ON YOUR PC. WHOA! HOLY SHIT BALLS!
And in case you have no fucking clue as to how, just look up emulators. 😮
A console can not do this…
Sure some consoles may release some … ok games. But what happens when you beat it? there’s no modifications to make the game more exciting and even extend the game play.
As for upgrading a PC, don’t be such a lemming and buy a PC as soon as they release a new mother board. Parts do get cheaper as the years go by, as for this PC, I spent a total of $300 on this and I can run any game on it 😮
HOLY SHIT!
Sure, I do like console, cause they are easy to work with, and take absolutely no knowledge what-so-ever to run them.
Sure, a PC may need some software to get a game to run, that takes what… a few minutes? maybe 10, depending on your connection.
Either way, both console and PC’s have their ups and downs. Therefore, they’re just as bad or as good as one another. So stop your bitching and shut the fuck up.
December 30, 2012 at 9:31 am
So you are basically saying just because a PC can do everything illegal make it better?
March 13, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Me,
You made alot of good points until you threw up ignorance like an internet retard with “So stop your bitching and shut the fuck up”. It sucks when someone tries to defend something and does it fairly well just to ruin it by acting like a total idiot and ruining all credibility. Sad…
Any argument for PC vs Console is settled in one sentence that I already wrote.
“The difference is with consoles the games themselves are optimized for the systems, as where with PCs the games are made to blow away all previous hardware to gain graphic superiority.”
March 27, 2009 at 12:33 pm
censored. you are pathetic.
April 24, 2009 at 9:30 pm
One thing so many have left out is gameplay. Maybe it’s because I started gaming back in the 80s and having given it up yet but the game play on the new PC games is absolute shit at best. Granted the graphics ala cut scenes etc are top knotch but eventually you have to play the game. 5 minutes into some shitty interface and you want to put the disks away and never play the BS again. What ever happened to market testing these games. Example, games like Black and White, Star Trek Armada, hell even Pools of Radience lacked what these new games have in graphics but you could play these games for years! I just finished comparing Shogun Total War with Rome Total war and it’s night and day! Rome rocks the graphics and options but the base game etc sucks in comparison. I’m tired of blowing 40-50 on a game I can’t get past 5 minutes playing. I’m out.
May 29, 2009 at 1:28 am
Using a PC for games is like using your car to mow the lawn.
Instead of using one blunt instrument to do two completely separate things, it’s a hell of a lot easier to use two different tools for the two different jobs: computer for work, and console for play. My “non-PC” does everything I could ever need from a computer, all in one device. I can take it anywhere, and it absolutely never crashes. EVER. And needless to say, once you use a trackpad, you’ll never want to use a clunky mouse ever again. I simply can no longer abide the massive (and massively outdated) mouse-and-keyboard design, and as clumsy as it is for writing, it is even less suited to modern gaming.
On the flip side, my console does everything I could ever want from a gaming system, and with only two devices (the console itself and the controller) that take up very little space. I can play it virtually anywhere in the house with ease, whether I’m on the couch, in my favorite recliner, or in bed. Despite the early overheating problems (which have now been fixed), the system has worked perfectly, and games such as GRAW2 have shown just how awesome modern gaming can be, not to mention how easy it is to add a friend or two on your couch and play simultaneously. Why would we ever settle for anything less?
And neither of these devices requires any maintenance or upkeep whatsoever. I never have to worry about constantly upgrading just so I can play the latest games, nor do I have to spend much money at all to get the full gaming experience. It’s a total no-brainer, and it’s no coincidence that all of the best games ever made have come out on… you guessed it…. consoles.
PC’s are dinosaurs.
July 9, 2009 at 2:09 pm
[…] I know no one actually will stop playing them (myself included) but this article adds one reason the dozens of others. […]
August 25, 2009 at 10:53 am
pc is much better than consoles, consoles are for dumbasses that cant think a little bit by their own. you people suck, and aint worth caling you gamers!!pc rules ps3,xbox360 and wii sucks
August 30, 2009 at 4:11 pm
man i was just like you, I used to think that the pc was the best until I found out that I have to upgrade my pc every time a more powerful game comes out (which now and days happens almost every 3 months). Sure the pc has valve and bizzare for games, but if you think about it those are the only 2 companies that actualy provide the pc with good games, my point is that 3 years from now the consoles will surpass the pc in games and in quality- gears of war is only the beginning, and soon consoles will soon enjoy the team fortress updates and crysis, and NO consoles don’t suck, for one I don’t have to build my console, my xbox360 has much better online than my pc, my ps3 actually came with a blue ray and my wii has motion detection, my friend you are the one who sucks.
July 17, 2010 at 6:43 am
Did you really update your PC every 3 months? I doubt you have. Anyone who claims to have to update their PC every 3 or 6 months to play new games coming out are a bunch of liars. You people do realize that PC games are also optimized for lower performing systems right? You know that “Options” menu where you can customize your graphical settings to accommodate your PC?? It’s really nifty.
Seriously quit using the whole “ohhh I gotta update my PC” excuse. The fact is that game developers find it more profitable to make games on consoles rather than PCs, therefore consoles get better games because those games will rake in the dough. Think about it, $300 game system vs $800 decent gaming PC. Of course more people will have a console rather than a gaming PC, it’s cheaper!
However, never ever believe that a console is better than a PC in terms of hardware. That’s just ridiculous.
September 29, 2009 at 2:03 pm
PC gaming sucks, some people are saying the ps3 and the 360 cant play crysis ?! look it up a bit more before spewing S*** ! It was good… 7 years ago… its still good for those games 7 years ago and the occassional MMO but otherwise, suck… I have spent 1000’s euro on PCs and if i hadnt stopped with them, i would have spent 1000’s more ! I mean, consoles = Quantity and Quality ! Pc = Quality sometimes ! I can surf the net with my ps3 ( infact, writing this on a ps3 ) and have games like Killzone 2, which pc will never have seeing as KZ is like 50gb of memory ! Im done with PC’s, nice to know other people are as well !
July 17, 2010 at 6:49 am
You have also spent just as much euros on consoles too, don’t be an idiot. Also, KZ being 50gb of memory? WTF, no. If you mean 50gb of hard drive space, then uh.. about 54 euros can get you a terabyte hard drive for your PC these days, that’s 1000 gigabytes if you didn’t know.
I agree that consoles have better games, but only because it’s more profitable to develop these games for the consoles.
October 25, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Seriously, what is a console? £200+ for a box that plays games with poor graphics, and crashes all the time. Despite being more expensive, I’d much rather have my PC, that does a lot more than just games. it’s also always ahead in terms of hardware and easier to repair. Like Microsoft, sony or Nintendo even give a shit if your console breaks.
December 29, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Lol, nice rant, and honestly very true!
PC Gaming is becoming elitist. It doesnt have to cost a fortune for hardware, or be a chore to get a game fully up, running and optimized, BUT… Thats only if you know what you are doing, so that itself makes it elitist.
I have been an avid fan of technology all of my life, and have been a PC Gamer for about 7 years.
It has took me all that time to know what I am doing with the hardware, and software my PC is made up of, and even then, some PC titles as simpy BROKEN, they just dont make the patch needed to fix the game, and that is bloody ridiculous, there should be laws against selling defunct products.
I enjoy consoles and PC’s, consoles are pick up and play, no doubt, some games are better suited, and more enjoyable on a console, but at the same time, that can be said for the PC.
If you are an experienced gamer, who likes to play with settings, MOD games, then you probably enjoy the complexity of what you can do with PC software.
As for some of the comments left here, there have been no good games for the PC, and are very few up and coming…
Thats the most stupid thing I have ever heard.
The average score for PC Game Titles ( Of which vastly outnumber those released on consoles, handhelds, and mobile phones accumulated ) is around 68 out of a possible 100, where the same score on concoles in each year since 2000 has been anywhere below that, down to 33%.
But most statistics are made up, so that could well be a lie.
Whatever…
Point being that PC Gaming does not suck, if you invest the time into learning about your PC, and its gaming market, you fill find a vareity of choice and depth unparalelled in the console market, but at the same time, for a casual gamer, the games console would probably be the better choice.
The End.

>Casuals
>PC Gaming
What? As far as I know, the only casual PC gamers I know play shit like peggle. I’m a hardcore gamer, I prefer to go through the trouble of all that shit you mentioned in your list. You know why? Because the finished, patched and even modded product is usually a LOT better than vanilla games on the consoles. Plus we have S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and you console players don’t. The PS3 simply has no games (except for a few, like LBP and MGS4), the RROD Xbox 360 has way too many FPS’s, it’s a saturated market. And don’t even get me started on that casual crapfest that is the Wii. The only games I have for my Wii is NMH1 and NMH2. They’re the only ones that are worth it.
I can afford upgrading my computer every year, and even then I don’t need to upgrade every single part. Right now my specs aren’t exactly cutting edge, but I can still run Crysis completely maxed out, and it only cost me $1250.
March 15, 2010 at 2:15 am
I also might add that I built this myself two years ago, and only upgraded the video card once.
March 30, 2010 at 11:46 am
I bought my PC 2 years ago for 700 dollars ( a mid range NON gameing PC ) and it ran every single game I throwed at and it still does . If I spend 100-200 dollars on a new video card it will run games 2-3 more years, without a problem.
So I second your post
April 15, 2010 at 7:00 pm
“I can afford upgrading my computer every year, and even then I don’t need to upgrade every single part. Right now my specs aren’t exactly cutting edge, but I can still run Crysis completely maxed out, and it only cost me $1250.”
you obviously didn’t pay any attention to what you said. You HAD to upgrade and the very dissapointing final result still isn’t good enough for you. As for crysis. If you ever read an article on it the company is releasing a future title on ps3 360. Why? They tested it and the consoles can handle it. Plus they were not happy at all at the sales on the game. Not to mention companies like ea and epic are leaving pc gaming as a back burner plan because sales are low. Numbers don’t lie. On that alone you’ve lost. As for upgrades IE next generations we only have to do that once every 5 years. You have to do it (even partially) every six months. Sad. Why not defend something that’s making money and not dissapointing the developers supporting your “platform”.

No shit consoles are making more money. It’s easier for parents to buy their kids a $200-300 toy rather than a decently built $800-1300 PC. Since there are more console lemmings, of course more money will be made if you develop a game for the console.
Again, people who say that PC users must upgrade every 6 months are quite idiotic. No you do not have to upgrade every 6 months because PC games will also be optimized for low end systems. Even then, a low budget PC system built now would still run Crysis easily on medium graphical settings, which is still better than what consoles can offer at the moment.
While it’s true that the shelf life of your console is quite long, your games cost about $10 to $20 more. What about buying extra controllers, hardware addons, or if you have an Xbox, a subscription to play online? That shit adds up don’t it.

Just another story of a retarded American trying to use something that demands more IQ than he has.
Quit shitting up the genepool, damn.
April 15, 2010 at 6:31 pm
This war is pointless. Videogames on consoles are a multi billion dollar a year industry. Pc gaming has died and been ressurected several times over the years via modded games (cough left for dead cough) posing as full retail. Now as for the controller vs mouse and keyboard… Let’s see. Needing a table vs just a small hand space… I’d rather take the smaller device. Another vailid point besides the sales numbers is shadowrun pit controller against mouse players and got….. Suprise!!! Mouse players getting owned by controller players!!! So much so they complained and demanded Microsoft release the drivers for the 360 controller!! So in short.
You lost because your sales on games are low.
You lost because your interface sucks.(for gaming)
You lost because your controller is inacurate.
You lost.
You lost.
You lost.
As for web browsing and social networking… My phone took that from you years ago!!!
Boom!
July 17, 2010 at 7:23 am
You do realize that Shadowrun was an underwhelming game in which the controllers got heavy aim assist and PC mouse+keyboard users didn’t right?
I would love to see some console kid trying to play Quake 3 and get owned real quick by a mouse user. Instead you got slow moving FPS games like Halo where aiming is a joke.
If you think PCs have lost, then you’re an even bigger idiot than I thought you were.
Sales on games low? Well no shit, if the games suck, why wouldn’t it have low sales?
PC interface for gaming sucking? What the fuck, do you even own a gaming PC?
Inaccurate controller? You must mean the mouse, but I’m going to pretend you don’t and thus well yeah I agree with you. Controllers need aim assist and bigger hit boxes to help them out. Mouse users don’t get that kind of crutch and they don’t need it.
That’s cool that you can web browse on your phone, but social networking is pretty much what phones are made for. I personally don’t like cramping my fingers typing on that shitty phone keyboard.
April 20, 2010 at 9:59 pm
All (3rd person action) console games are essentially all the same thing. This includes the supposed “good” ones. They look, sound, and feel the same. Same character kinesthetics. Same quick-tap, reaction time, button-mashing shallow garbage, made for a shallow awareness. Point your avatar in the right direction, and mash your way there. (climbing and crawling doesn’t change it any) Deep as a mud puddle.
The representational console game (3P-action) are made for shallow, childish gamers, the archetypal PC game (RPG’s) are made for mature, adult gamers.
April 20, 2010 at 10:02 pm
Oh yeah…
PC also has superior graphics, finesse and personalization of controls, and game modability.
Console games are popular for the same reason Britney Spears was.
May 5, 2010 at 6:49 pm
Actually you got it backwards. Console game popularity can’t be used in the same phrase as ” was ” they still are and will always be. Pc games “Was” popular for the same reason goth music and punk exists. Whiney brats that suck at everything that can’t seem to let go of dead eras. As for modding…. Well the sales speak for themselves. Hell even counterstrike and left for dead needed to go retail. Pc gaming is overly expensive and there’s no money in it. As for improvements there aren’t any. Ports from console to pc and pc to console often look less great. Kinda the same rules for videotape accept with code and tools. Rightfully so, so many people go broke from buyin the machine that they’re too cheap to invest in half done 10 dollar crap. All for what? A slight difference and an unsupported community. Not totally I admit. I forgot there’s still a few hundred holding on for dear life. But if you really want to get smart pc and console are the same with the acception that console hardware is streamlined to be fast and easy while pc is and will always be a slopy mess.
July 17, 2010 at 7:39 am
I don’t think you’ve played online with your console much. I’ve heard more whiny preteen brats on console games than on PC games. Counterstrike went retail because it was a quick way to make cash, but CS1.6 was still free. Duh. If you want to say that people go broke buying PCs, well I can say that consoles are the poor man’s toy, but shit, you could build a decent gaming PC for the same price if you were to buy a console with the needed accessories. Console hardware streamlined? What a joke, you mean they use outdated hardware that is nowhere as fast as a PC. Still, developers gotta earn that easy money, so they’ll develop their games using outdated console hardware. Too bad those games are basically clones of each other.
May 17, 2010 at 8:09 pm
If you buy one game a year from the bargan bin you are not worthy of being called a gamer. Your a developer, really? Is it really that hard to get a PC game going? I think not. Only now they are becoming tougher since they make them for crappy consoles and port to computers. Consoles are great for sports games and arcade style games. It simply comes down to money. Making games for consoles makes the developers more money. There are more casual gamers than hard core. Also, most people only have a $500.00 pos and can not afford to upgrade every 3 years and/or do not have the brain power to build a PC. There are so many reasons computer games are better I would have to be paid for my time to list them all (minus the cost)! Damn casual gamers, killing the computer gaming industry…
June 18, 2010 at 6:33 am
I absolutely can’t wait for this game..
July 19, 2010 at 2:08 am
What is there to say. $60 per game times three parts for a whopping $180 dollars. No game is worth that. I remember when games like Total Annihilation (Better than Starcraft 1) by Cavedog came out with nice games that had open editors and you could create tons of arm and core dudes. Here is Starcraft 2, lame as hell, limited in thought, no lan allowed, expensive, map editor is supposed to take a genius to use, and a possibility of being required to use Battlenet to even play it. Gamers mad need to be on Battlenet to even get certain features of the game that will not come with the stand alone product. Bite me.
I will never buy any games from Blizzard or their new ally Activision. I will pirate your games and figure ways around your stupid system. You will learn that GREED is not the key to gaming. Driving out your competition until your the only one left is why we are left with crap. Take Microsoft for example.
World save your money, do not preorder, and send these clowns at Blizzard and Activision a clear message. Follow the days of old school games like Total Annihilation that treated games with respect, and boycott Blizzard.
NO LAN, BATTLENET REQUIRED!
$180 FOR ONLY PART OF GAME!
YOU SUCK BLIZZARD & ACTIVISION!
HOPE YOU GUYS GO BELLY UP!
July 28, 2010 at 5:40 pm
Bought the Star Craft 2 game today. I was loading the game and became so frustrated with all their start-up B.S. that I destroyed the disc. I just wanted to play the single person campaign, not give out information about my first-born. Really people, it was a miserable experience. I have played PS3 for the last few years and forgot how messed up the P.C. gaming world had become.
August 4, 2010 at 9:05 am
You must be the most pathetic software developer in the world if you really went through this thought process. A thought process that would be idiotic even to an average 11 year old.
August 6, 2010 at 4:13 am
sometimes if u fill out the details properly when you buy a game, your real name and such, address.. they send you a game in the mail, its pretty cool.. makes ones day
August 6, 2010 at 6:13 pm
First off, I dig your website, and found this article hilarious. Second, I feel like I could contribute to this conversation, as a PC gamer since Wolfenstein 3D came out on a blue 3.5 inch floppy. (Note: Games in those days didn’t get patches, and they worked.)
This is not a fight where either side “wins.” It is not console vs. PC. We play mostly the same games, and let’s face it: most of them SUCK. They have gorgeous graphics that necessitate expensive hardware (consoles are hardware too) while requiring little thought from the users.
I don’t want to sound like an ancient asshole, but I like games that offer choices, challenges, and depth, and unfortunately, I find myself playing old games more often than new ones for these reasons.
My hypothesis is that PC games have lost their greatness because they are afterthoughts, lumped into the cross-platform sea with their strengths as a medium discarded. All platforms have strengths and weaknesses, and PC’s strength as a platform for deep RPG’s and fast shooters is diminished when it has to run games that just aren’t created for it. Let’s face it; console gaming is more culturally acceptable than tinkering with a computer; thus, consoles make more money, and to make a PC-only game is financially foolish. Games such as “Arcanum” were made by PC nerds, for PC nerds. Games like “Mass Effect” are made to please as many people as possible. It’s a market, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
I guess I AM saying that PC gamers are different from console gamers, and while this doesn’t give them the right to say anyone is better than anyone, I think they have the right to expect games that 1) work, and 2) kick ass, and if both of these qualities aren’t delivered, then PC gaming really is dead.
Man that was long, sorry…keep up the good work.
December 30, 2010 at 9:37 am
You’re absolutely right. The gaming market has been divided into genres and companies just keep launching more and more games that belong to any given genre with slighty better eye candy and absolutely no thought in terms of gameplay. It’s bloody ironic that the only game launched in these past years that actually defies genre classification was a mod for Warcraft 3 called Dota which, even more ironically, has now spawned a whole new genre of games (HoN, LoL, Demigod, etc.) of its own. Please game devs, get ur heads out of ur asses and try using them for a change.
September 27, 2010 at 2:21 pm
PCs are better than consoles and it’s not as complicated as all that shit you went through. Actually
1. Start Steam
2. Pick your downloaded game
3. Play it m,uch better quality than your consoles and alot fast etc. etc.
Enough said
June 18, 2011 at 12:18 pm
Correction:
1. Download Steam
2. Find out you don’t have a good enough processor
3. Spend $70 on a new processor
4. Find out they want your personal information
5. Give them credit card info, etc
6. Get your credit card stolen
7. Cancel it
8. Destroy PC with bottle rockets
October 1, 2010 at 1:32 pm
Who cares about consoles anyway, they sell a lot more but pcs are the future.
Pc is so elitists you think it sucks because you don’t know what you are speaking about.
We got the best RTS, the best MMORPG, the best FPS, arcade perfect emulation, and console perfect emulation for last gen consoles.
What console is ? A mean fo preteen being too impatient to directly play a dubbed down version, thus avoiding complicated manoeuver the pc got.
October 22, 2010 at 10:48 am
Pc’s are Harley’s,Consoles are Vespa’s
and trix r 4 kids.
consoles are holding back the gaming industry with their weak 640X480 720p code.
October 29, 2010 at 4:45 pm
Remember when we used to sit together with our family and play cards? Do any of you ever go fishing or just shoot hoops? Maybe kick around a soccer ball? I remember the graphics on those activites were ultra high and gameplay was forever with very little investment. Nothing to upgrade. The weird thing was that it all felt so real. Hmmm… I sure miss those days. Soon enough, I think getting up out of this pizza-encrusted chair would be good for me and opening a window and letting out the funky odor. Does anyone know if the sun still comes out and if women still exist?
December 30, 2010 at 9:32 am
I just pirate everything and if the game is faulty and I need to download patches, I pirate the f*ckin’ patches too. Has been working so far.

I am really thankful to this topic because it really gives great information :`:
March 13, 2011 at 2:22 pm
I just sold my consoles since for the following reasons
(1) Bad lag online
(2) Always frame rate issues
(3) to many kids taking trash
(4) DLC is a rip off
(5) cant host your own servers
(6)Graphics are out dated
If you got the money then PC gaming is where its at .
March 13, 2011 at 2:23 pm
Also I support game developers … i would never use torrents . Steam is all I need
March 22, 2011 at 8:17 pm
I have been playing both console and pc games since I was little and have enjoyed both very much. Neither pc or consoles are better. They both suck now in days. All there every about is graphics and eyecandy and crap like that. What happened to games like paper mario, roadrash, simcity and donkey kong64. All the latest crap is awfull but more so on the pc. There are barely any good pc games and they suck and are buggy. Developers are trying to make games for all platforms. Assasins creed brotherhood is a perfect example. I tried playing the game on pc and it sucks. I can’t get the sound working and there are bugs everywere. Though the bugs arent that bad they are still noticble, such as poor camera control and video glitches. And the game offers very little user interactivity. Its just go here and kill people and then keep going. There are no puzzles or large game decisions. If i wanted to watch a movie i would but a game should be more than just a playable movie and sadly they have become just that.

Hilarious. Yup that Uncharted 2, Killzone 3, MGS4, all of those are sure created with “outdated” hardware. Poor PC fanboy, can’t accept the truth that you spend over a grand for a top of the line gaming rig only to be outdone by a console that costs as little as $200 dollars. It’s not really a “poor mans toy” when it is really just people being smart with their money. But don’t feel bad, the worlds needs suckers.
April 13, 2011 at 4:31 pm
Oh yeah, totally forgot to mention that’s alright for full priced PC games to be released and barely working but it’s “TEH PC GAMING!!” so it’s alright, yet if a console game needs a patch, everyone gets up in arms about it and pokes fun at consoles. Guess what nerds, your gaming rig that you spent a months worth of money (or more) to build, still needs a $100+ dollar graphics card AND numerous patches to finally be able to experience it. Again, suckers.

You console gamers are awful, dumbed down the industry, and why wouldn’t you have dx9 installed? SO HARD.

@Chris, the irony is too much. My $400 2005 prebuilt still plays fallout new vegas… You are a fanboy extraordinaire, enjoy playing multiplayer against people that don’t know a holes from elbows and thinking you’re good.

Ah ya gotta love it when casual gamers pretend they know what they’re talking about…
Xbox 360s graphics are just as good as PC- Hahahahahahahaha is that a joke? Crysis on maximum power, nuff said.
It’s too expensive- It’s a computer, it does everything you’ll need, so spending 1.5K isn’t that bad.
Too complicated- Is it that hard to check the system settings?
So, could you casual folks please play cable TV games or something, and leave gamers to play, because they actual know the difference between a Computer and a game machine.
Computer- Monster that does everything electronic
Console- Games and DVDs
May 18, 2011 at 8:45 pm
The big difference with a console and a pc? Maintening and keeping up-to-date a PC is by itself a hobby.
May 22, 2011 at 5:34 am
Personally I gave up giving two s**ts about graphics (unless of course it really is some good eye candy) I would much prefer an entertaining game with graphics from the 60s than a good looking one pushed to the boundaries of possibility with no good game-play.

If your PC didn’t suck cock, you wouldn’t have had any of those problems.
Enjoy your blotchy graphics, and shitty controls on your console.
I’ll be playing Arma II
August 3, 2011 at 11:07 pm
Good reading. Good rants, and raves. I agree on both sides. I’m a PC gamer since the late 80s. Played 2d games, and some text based ones “Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy”. Wow 3d cards came along…. Wow incredible graphics. PS2 2d. Built 2 more PC. Ps2 still 2d. Great PC games. Here’s the Xbox and PS3. Looks nice, but have to use a stupid controller even though they both claimed you would be able to use a mouse. FPS were great with a mouse. Consolittis starts kicking in on the PC games as more are developed for the consoles then ported. Auto-aim.. WTF is that. Oh console crap. You got to have it if you want to hit your target. Gave in when there was nothing good coming out on the PC and wanted to wait to build a new PC, so I bought a PS3. Bought BFBC2 for the PS3 and about sold the whole thing after playing it for 5 mins with a controller. Got online to play and discovered everyone hates the contorller as the scores reflected were pitiful compared to scores for the same game on the PC. It lasted 4 months then the HDMI burnt out. Games run smooth… or most of the time. Graphics are OK but the texture resolutions are much lower compared to a PC, and many of the effects are done in low res and look like crap on a HDTV, some of the games look better on a SDTV. Sent the PS3 in for repair and in the meantime built a new PC. Bought some of the games GTA4, Just Cause 2 for my PC that I played on the PS3. Wow what a diffence. The games look great compared to the console versions, after turning off all the effects that make it look like crap and very unrealistic. My eyes are not a camera lense, motion blur, depth of field, very hard on the eyes, and unrealistic unless you look through a camera lense all day. Also the games run much more fluidly on a PC when I compared them to the PS3 versions. Now I can use a mouse again, and when I do jump into a vehicle I can grab my gamepad and use it for control instead…. can’t do that with a console. If they would ditch the stupid controller I might have bought into the consoles, but they just don’t want to completely destroy the PC gaming market by giving PC gamers what they want on the console… If they did do that the console market would suffer also because the PC market drives it to begin with. We have to learn to love our console brothers and hope that both drive each other to better stuff in the future. Arma 2 you’ll never see on a console…. Superb sim, makes BF2 look like a kids game. It’s all a matter of taste. I think Red Dead Redemption qualifies as a masterpiece compared to anything I’ve seen on a PC in a while. GOTY and on a console.
To me it’s all about immersion. 3rd person games do not immerse me. First person games provide that immersion, combined with the natural feeling of a mouse to move your character the immerision was complete. The only 3rd person game that provided immerision on a console for me was RDR, but it was more like remotely controlling the character with a gamepad. Sorry to say all you console gamers missed out on Stalker. Sorry to say all you PC gamers missed out on Read Dead. I can’t wait until the Star Trek style Halodeck becomes a reality. Humanity will cease to function at that point as everyone creates their own world, and abandones the real one..

Dummies play on console, the retarded cousin of the PC, the runt of the litter that got the bottom of the barrel genes. Grow up dummies, play on a PC, stretch your mind, learn something new, stop being a lazy tard and give up on the kiddie platform. Hell it’s a failure on the latest games, tech limitations and god knows how any of you can stand an FPS on it, ugh. Say what you will but one day all the smart people will be gone and none of you will know how to make shit!

Why PC Games Suck « The 12 Angry Men Blog…
September 27, 2011 at 12:55 am
I have to disagree with the blogger in almost every point he tries to make.
I will concede this, the console is probably better for the casual gamer.
Now, casual pussies aside, the PC dances circles around any console, naked, backwards, and on it’s fingertips.
So once you get your wimpy 27 frames per second bumped up to about 80, THX TrueStudio sound coming across your home theater, 1600dpi which destroys even the best of HDTV’s, get rid of the toy controller with like 10 buttons, for a mouse with 15 and a keyboard with another 90, and a 4 node 4-terabyte raid partition rolling, you’re ready to play like a big boy.
Plus you can get a free memory editor, and C++. I typically play games at 2x their speed. Before the end of the week you’ll have console noobs paypal’n you enough to fund your next system.
The PC isn’t a toy. It’s a command center. There is nothing casual about it, just like there’s nothing casual about a Bugatti Veyron SS. Fred Flinstone your pinto-console around town all you want. Tell yourself whatever you need to make it ok. But it’s a far cry from the truly delightful experience you could be having.
You don’t even have to pay for games on the PC. Hell, with a PC you don’t have to pay for console games either. You just download them and skip steps 1 – 16. All the money saved from paying for software can go directly into your hardware. And there in lies the true reason that PC games suck. For every 100 people playing, 1 actually paid.
BTW, DoWII Retribution is the one you should get.

PC gaming used to be the best way to play games. There was a time when virtually every console game had its superior PC equivalent. Now it seems that console exclusives run the market and companies don’t bother with a PC release, and when they decide to release to PC it is usually with a buggy port. When you finally get everything running perfectly your hardware is outdated and you need to purchase a new video card that is the same price as a game console. When you get the new video card you discover that you need additional memory. When you buy this new memory you need to throw your old stuff out because your new ram is just going to slow down your dual sticks. When you get around to doing all this you find that your video drivers need a quick fix in order to run the game at its full glory, and this wont be released for several months, and by that time you have beaten the game and it is now outdated. Time to rinse and repeat. PC gaming is awesome for MMOs RTSs simulations and certain types of games designed for PC, while everything else just seems to be buggy and expensive and should (i can’t believe i’m saying this) stay on the console, and is it just me or are programmers getting really lazy. They expect the user to do all their dirty work for them. Please excuse me while i wash my fingers for an hour from typing what I never wanted to type in my life, PC gaming is dying fast!

Ok this is a old long thread. PC games do not suck but I do agree with your point that they can be a pain in the ass. I was playing Freelancer, an older game with my kids, on three different PCs in my home. Each of them is older the other with XP, Vista, and Win7. You get the idea i think. Dam thing kept losing its character info which was frustrating. Then I pulled out another older game called Total Annihilation and tried to get them working together well screw it. I am just some guy that wanted to play some games with my kids and I dont have the patience for this BS. No and no I will not get my kids into something like WoW which would probably work on all of them.
PC games that I have played that didnt suck include World of Warcraft, Eve Online, D2LoD, and Starcraft. By not sucking I mean worked as intended and did not crash or bug out often.
I dont want to dick around so I am a console guy from now on.

I agree with your points on PC. But if you want to play games on the PC you need Steam, which completely invalidates your PC points of even needing a disk. Also, the PC is a better game system for people who like programming and modifying games and the hardware. You can’t do that on the console.

Lets settle this now Im a console guy and personally Im fine playing on my PS3 the graphics are ok and my internet is fast enough but theres no denying the superiority the PC has over consoles but heres the thing if you have to work and pay bills or even if you live with your parents still its still a large sum of money you gotta pay you’re looking at 1000 to 1500$ for a good PC the working man usually can’t fork over that much for a PC plus the the cost of the upgrades and graphic cards will add up all for the sake of better graphics which is the main argument PC gamers make for why its better and let me tell you if you go out and buy all the HD cords you need of the PS3 or Xbox360 it looks pretty darn good the most I’ve ever seen was 40$ dollars for one and I’ve seen graphics cards up to 400$ dollars granite not all are that much but still for that much you could buy a PS3 or Xbox360 a second controller HDMI cords and several games plus the the controllers are fine I never ever found it hard to use any controller from Nintendo,PS3, or Xbox360 why PC go on for hours about the mouse is so much better escapes me even worse almost every PC gamer i know uses an Xbox controller to play online which is kinda ludicrous plus every freaking day i see a trailer for an awesome console game sure you guys got WoW and that crappy star wars MMO the only game worth playing on PC is Battle Field 3 only because it supports more people. if you make 70,000 a year and you have the mental aptitude to not go insane from all the updates, patches, upgrades, and the imminent threat of of becoming obsolesce just around the corner you’ll live plus ps3 and xbox life span is like what 7 years PC is what 5 or 6 months before gotta upgrade and a standard ps3 and xbox is 200$ and a newer model is only 250$ all in all if you wanna good experience that doesn’t bankrupt you go with console but if you got money by all means have fun on PC now every shut the heck up
