Um, right. You *could* check your "convert disease" at the door, thanks. (Hint: People who live most of their lives in Virginia aren't "from Illinois." :))

RMD is unlikely to run for president, even if he wanted to: (a) both he and his wife are not in especially good health, (b) he is set up pretty nicely in Chicago, (c) he's got the usual Chicago sleaze in his vita, which I don't think will go down too well right now, (d) more importantly, he's got a positions on a lot of social issues that went down OK in Chicago but would be trouble nationally (think Guiliani but without the aura of 911).

If he wanted to run, he should have run for Gov of Illinois in 2002 or Senate in 2004, which he didn't do.

A fair prediction, ye who has some form of allegiance to the Empire State. However, isn't there almost half a year before this even gets decided?

Also, as a commenting number cruncher, I'd be curious to see what kind of evidence there is for the strength of a relationship between the amount of money spent and the percentage of votes received for the modern elections (let's use 1996-present for an example, and consider all congressional, gubernatorial, and presidential primaries). If you can find such a study, I'd love to note if your theory of the Clinton romp through the first rounds of primaries is justified by something other than intuition and media reports. Maybe this can be another post to the blog at a future date closer to the election.

Well, I don't know what your criteria for "notable politician" are, but given that Richard J. Daley (Mayor, City of Chicago) basically personally decided at least one Presidential election (1960) for trivial reasons of local Chicago politics, I'd see he qualifies.

Anyone who elects a President as an effective method to solve a local problem is pretty "notable". :)

As the unparalleled Mike Royko so eloquently says of the occasion:

"When he boarded the Inauguration Special with his family and one thousand other Democrats to go to Washingon, he was...with the single exception of the president, the most powerful politician in the country."

Hail to the King, baby!

It's too early to handicap the primaries. BTW, Spitzer sounds like a breath of fresh air in Albany.

You know why Guilliani is running for President? Because it is a step up from Mayor of New York.

Know why the Daley's never will? Because it would be a step down from Chicago.

Angry Illini Husker:
thus why Barack will carry his home state, crushing the junior senator from New York

Right now Obama is set to lose Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada, coming into New York, New Jersey, Florida and California (where he's likely to fare much worse) at a severe disadvantage. By the time Illinois votes in their primary, Obama will be a washed out has-been like John Edwards.

mildlypiquedacademician:

I'll give you Reagan and Douglas, but having to resort to Lord Dick, the First Duke of Daley, William Jennings Bryan and Dennis "Sock Puppet" Hastert, I believe proves my point :)

###Whose state hasn’t produced a notable politician since Lincoln###

Damn you Wordpress, you deleted my comments. I'm going to summarize them. I'd have to say the answer is no, unless "notable politician" = "elected president when living in the state." Off the top of my head:

Ronald Reagan and Hillary Clinton both grew up in Illinois, though they left as young adults.

Paul Simon (of the bowtie, not of the guitar) moved here as a young adult and rose to national prominence.

Paul Douglas (economist and Marine private at age 40 in World War II) was a notable senator.

Richard J. Daley (King Richard I) was one of the most powerful politicians in the US from the 1950s to the 1970s, despite only being Mayor of Chicago.

John Peter Altgeld (Governor of Illinois in the 1890s) had the misfortune of being born in Deutschland or else he might have been a presidential contender.

William Jennings Bryan grew up in Illinois but moved to Nebraska as a young adult to get out from under the shadow of his father.

Of course, Dennis "Wrestling Coach Turned Tom Delay's Sock Puppet Turned Backbencher" Hastert is from Illinois.

Whose state hasn’t produced a notable politician since Lincoln

Sorry, we have been to busy inventing aquariums, sky scrapers, modern computers, nuclear power, running the world's commodity exchanges, operating the world's busiest airport... and educating your sorry ass (oh noes! the cat is out of the bag!) :)

But in the mean time we run a state that actually works, and a city that doesn't suck, which is more than I can say for New York. (OOOOHHHHH!)

You know, Mr. Angry New Mexican, that this kind of attitude by New Yorkers towards my brethren in Illinois is precisely the kind of barbs we take offense to, and thus why Barack will carry his home state, crushing the junior senator from New York who, while improving on her status as a New Yorker as you so dutifully note, has not, in my humble opinion, achieved such a level. But what do I know.... look at my name!
